The fruit bodies have dark brown caps that are up to 13 cm in diameter and covered with patches of soft greyish-brown scales or warts. Nothofagin is a dihydrochalcone. It is a C-linked phloretin glucoside found in rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) and New Zealand red beech (Nothofagus fusca). It is a phenolic antioxidant.
